Blagojevich’s Burris Appointment Tale Of Blatant Democratic Partisanship, Incompetence, and Racism

Corrupt Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich rubbed his fellow Democrat’s nose in their own manure last week.  In Blagojevich’s own words at the press conference announcing his decision to appoint Roland Burris to Barack Obama’s vacant U.S. Senate seat:

Let me say again that the law requires that the governor make an appointment of a United States senator in the absence of any other law that would have given the people of Illinois a chance to be able to elect the successor to the United States Senate.

And when the legislature didn’t act on this legislation they said they were considering, which I supported, which would have given the people the right to be able to elect the next senator, failing that, then it’s the governor’s responsibility to fill the vacancy.

And to not fill the vacancy would be to deprive the people of Illinois of two United States senators, to deprive the people of Illinois of their appropriate voice and votes in the United States Senate.

In other words, all Blagojevich’s self-serving “What I do I do for the people” rhetoric aside, Governor Blago is clearly pointing out that he acted because the Democrat-dominated Illinois political establishment refused to act in an intelligent manner and require a special election.

Oh, Democrats demand a special election – at first.  Then the hyper-partisan Democrats realized that the utter disgust over fellow Democrat Rod Blagojevich’s despicable behavior might very likely result in an election seeing a Republican win the U.S. Senate seat.  And then partisan politics replaced integrity and common sense.  Then the tune immediately changed to how Democrats – who care so much about limiting government spending – thought it unwise to spend several million dollars to have an election a Republican might win.  Far better for the voters if Democrats thwart the will of the voters and let a Democrat appoint a fellow Democrat, they said.

And Governor Blagojevich saw this Democratic Party partisanship and incompetence as his chance to act.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid – to his credit – has weighed in:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) called the charges against Blagojevich “as serious a breach of the public trust as I have ever heard.”

“It is clear that anyone Gov. Blagojevich appoints to the Senate will fairly or unfairly be tainted by questions of impropriety,” he said. “A different process to select a new senator must be put in place — and that process should not involve Gov. Blagojevich.”

Harry Reid has vowed not to allow Burris to be seated.  But for any good intentions (or more probably, for all any efforts to spare Democrats from still further scandal over having a disgraced Governor who is on tape trying to sell a US Senate seat to the highest bidder fill the very seat in question) Reid’s manuever amounts to still further Democratic incompetence.

The rules are actually pretty clear:

Peter Johnson Jr., a FOX News legal analyst, said Wednesday the law favors Blagojevich and Burris.”The Supreme Court has made it clear with regard to congressman … The Constitution allows them to make a decision, but the decision is based on the parameters upon the  constitution … Are you the right age? Are you a citizen? That’s it. It’s not a discretionary thing, are you qualified? Do we like the guy that appointed you?” Johnson said.

“The Senate has the right to expel on a two-thirds vote. They don’t have a discretionary right if he meets the constitutional requirements. This is a constitutional crisis,” he said.

Democrats are even considering the rather childish maneuver of locking the Senate doors to prevent Burris from entering.  But Roland Burris has already left his dignity at the door in accepting the Blagojevich appointment in the first place.  Standing outside and pounding on wood won’t further diminish his diminished dignity in the slightest.

Mind you, it is understandable that Democrats – who have run roughshod over the Constitution for decades in their pursuit of more and more unbridled government control over the peoples’ lives – would fail to understand or respect the Constitution yet again.

Democrats could have nipped this entire crisis in the bud by doing the right thing and calling for a sepcial election.  They probably still COULD call for a special election and put the ball back into Blago’s court and put him in a position where HE’D be thwarting the will of the people to elect their representatives.  But they simply  can’t bring themsleves to allow the people a chance to elect a Republican to fill Barack Obama’s Senate seat.

But the worst – the most perverse, the most hypocritical, the most biased, and the most blatantly racist – Democrat behavior is epitomized in Black Caucus Member Rep. Bobby Rush.

To quote Rush, who appeared at Governor Blagojevich’s press conference to passionately defend Blago’s appointment:

I — my prayers have been answered because I prayed fervently that the governor would continue the legacy established by President-elect Obama and that the governor would appoint an African-American to complete the term of President Obama.

Rush went on to say:

This is a matter of national importance. There are no African- Americans in the Senate, and I don’t think that anyone — any U.S. senator, who’s sitting in the Senate, right now, wants to go on record to deny one African-American for being seated in the U.S. Senate. I don’t think they want to go on record doing that. And so, I intend to take that argument to the Congressional Black Caucus.

In a blatant play of the race card, Rep. Bobby Rush warned Democrats who don’t want to see ANY Blagojevich pick be seated in the U.S. Senate:

“I will ask you not to hang and lynch the appointee as you try to castigate the appointer.”

In other words, seat Roland Burris and you’re open-minded and tolerant.  Don’t seat him, and you are the equivalent of a Klu Klux Klansman riding with a lynch party.

Bobby Rush views the world through racial – and frankly racist – eyes.  All that matters to him is skin color.  He doesn’t care about hypocrisy, honor, character, or anything else.

If this is not already clear, let me replay Bobby Rush’s own words made BEFORE Blagojevich picked a black guy:

On December 9, the same Bobby Rush who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Governor Rod Blagojevich willing to fight to the death to defend his right to name the next Senator from Illinois said:

“His goose is cooked,” Rush said of the governor. “He has no moral basis for appointing the next senator from the state of Illinois. … That person would be as tainted as they could be.”

Investor’s Business Daily writes about the whole sordid affair that is getting more sordid all the time:

[Rolland] Burris himself claims “the reason in appointing me” is his supposed status as “a very qualified, capable, able and ready-to-serve individual.” “Ready to serve” is right — even if it means getting to do so thanks to the power of a sleazy personification of the Chicago political machine.

It shouldn’t be a surprise. Chicagoans interested in measuring the girth of Burris’ ego can take a stroll through Oak Woods Cemetery on the South Side. There, they can admire the would-be senator’s huge, already-erected tombstone, proclaiming him in bold letters to be a “Trail Blazer” above a kind of engraved resume — leaving ample room for future accomplishments, of course.

Naturally, someone so full of himself that he’d erect a monument dedicated to his own memory before he even becomes a memory would find it hard to turn down an appointment to the U.S. Senate, no matter who offers it to him. But don’t Illinoisans deserve a senator who spends a little less time gazing into the mirror?

“The reason in appointing me,” as Burris puts it, actually had nothing to do with Blagojevich’s assessment of Burris’ qualifications or abilities. The sad and shameful truth is that this man was appointed because he is black. The disgraced, wheeler-dealer governor of Illinois is playing the race card to save his political career, and Burris is only too happy to cooperate in the ploy.

To illustrate just how much Blagojevich’s choice has to do with race, consider the flip-flop by Rep. (and former Black Panther) Bobby Rush.

Before Burris was named, the Congressional Black Caucus member Rush insisted that Blagojevich, who was caught on tape apparently seeking to sell his appointment to the highest bidder, “should not be able to appoint the next U.S. senator from Illinois.”

Rush said the governor “has abdicated his responsibility and his authority.” Therefore, “he has no moral basis for appointing the next senator from the state of Illinois.”

But once Blagojevich announced Burris as his pick, Rush was singing a different tune, appearing at the crooked governor’s press conference and warning Senate Democrats, who say they won’t allow Burris to be seated, not to “hang and lynch the appointee as you try to castigate the appointer.”

Rush, pointing out that with Obama resigning his seat “there are no African-Americans in the United States Senate,” asks: “Is it racism that is taking place?”

The answer is yes. Because it should certainly be considered a form of racism to exploit skin color to save the skin of a 21st-century Boss Tweed. And Rush and Burris can count themselves as Blagojevich’s collaborators in this outrage.

How could Burris stand up there on the podium beside someone caught trying to sell a political office? How could he allow himself to be photographed grinning alongside Blagojevich, as the state’s top political con artist stood at a rostrum bearing the state seal?

Senate Democrats are ready to physically prevent Burris from taking his seat because they know that they and their party will be further tainted by the Blagojevich scandal if Burris sits among them. The fact that Roland Burris and Bobby Rush don’t know it indicates that power is more important to them than honor.

Chicago Tribune writer John Kass brings this mess home to the soon-to-be-occupant of the White House:

President-elect Barack Obama was not found as an infant, floating in a reed basket along the banks of the Chicago River. He is not the gentle faun, the Mr. Tumnus, of the Daley machine. Obama could have forcefully and publicly demanded that Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan and fellow Illinois Democrats support legislation for a special election to fill his vacated Senate seat. Obama had a responsibility to the people of Illinois to do so. But he kept his mouth shut. As always, he avoided conflict with machine political bosses, a consistent character trait stubbornly ignored by his media cheerleaders.

His top White House strategist and his chief of staff are creatures of the Daley machine, and Democrats didn’t want to risk the Senate seat. What happened to the promise of transcending the old politics?

So when the freak show comes to Washington next week and political hack Roland “I’m a tool of the people” Burris is denied entry to the Senate, and the national political class shrieks in fake outrage and Blagojevich surrounds himself with African-American ministers and he sings “Let my people go!” remember who could have stopped all this: Obama, Madigan, Daley and the Illinois Democrats.

This whole sorry story is Chicago Democratic politics at its worst.  It has affected the entire country and the entire American political process.  And it has revealed the Democratic Party for the corrupt, incompetent, partisan, and race-baiting disaster that it truly is.

As a developing update to this story, Barack Obama’s selection for Secretary of Commerce, Bill Richardson, has withdrawn himself from the appointment due to the same sort of “pay for play” allegations that Governor Rod Blagojevich himself has been implicated in.

Update January 6, 2009: Bobby Rush upped the ante in his use of allegations of racism as a weapon of mass destruction:

U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Ill., one of Burris’ top cheerleaders on Capitol Hill, accused the Senate leadership of racism Tuesday. Burris is black and if seated would be the only black member of the U.S. Senate, a distinction Obama once held.

“While they might not be termed racist, their action is racist,” Rush told FOX News. “I think that if Roland Burris hadn’t been an African American, then he would have been allowed to accept the appointment and become a senator.”

Demonize Rush Limbaugh as you may, liberals.  But he was right spot on about your vicious tactics.  He has repeatedly predicted throughout the campaign that even electing a black man to the highest office in the land would do nothing to undermine the left’s use of racism-as-political-weapon.  It is fittingly ironic that someone like Bobby Rush would use that weapon in the very Senate seat that Obama vacates to assume the presidency, using the profoundly racist argument that the seat should be awarded based on skin color above all other considerations.

What is laugh-your-head-off funny is that Democrats – who have used racism as a political weapon for years – are now employing it in the proverbial circular firing squad.

Blatant partisanship, incompetence, and racism.  Democratic hallmarks all.
