Why PBS’ Bill Moyers Et Al Moral Idiots For Condemning Israel – Pt 2

Read Why PBS’ Bill Moyers Et Al Moral Idiots For Condemning Israel – Pt 1

There is more.  I listened to Bill Moyers describe the Bible as a book in which God commands the Jews to exterminate foreign peoples.  He says,

When the ancient Israelites entered Canaan, their leaders urged violence against its inhabitants.  The very Moses who brought down the commandment, “Thou shalt not kill,” now proclaimed, “You must destroy completely all the places where the nations have served their gods… and wipe out their name from that place.”  So, God-soaked violence became genetically coded.  A radical strain of Islam now seeks to eliminate Israel from the face of the earth.

First of all, let me begin by showing you how Bill Moyers and Adolf Hitler would be nodding their heads in solemn agreement with one another on this subject.  In his Mein Kampf, p. 454, Hitler wrote:

“The objection may very well be raised that such phenomena in world history arise for the most part from specifically Jewish modes of thought, in fact, that this type of intolerance and fanaticism positively embodies the Jewish nature.  This may be a thousand times true; we may deeply regret this fact and establish with justifiable loathing that its appearance in the history of mankind is something that was previously alien to history – yet this does not alter the fact that this condition is with us today.”

That isn’t good, Mr. Moyers.  It isn’t good at all that you and Adolf Hitler are on the same exact page in lamenting so-called “Jewish intolerance and fanaticism.”  There is either something profoundly wrong with your thesis, or there was something right about Hitler’s.  And the latter view is evil to the core.

Secondly, should I begin with Bill Moyers’ setting himself up as a greater moral authority than the God of the Bible?  Or should I comment upon the twisted accusation clearly implicit in Moyers’ analysis that the Jews’ own hateful religion and their own hateful God are sins that are now coming home to roost in the form of Muslims holding to the same religious hatred and intolerance.  Is Islamic terrorism Jews’ karma for introducing their vengeful tribal God to the world?  You can almost see Bill Moyers’ sadness: “Oh, would that the God of the Holy Bible been MOYERS instead of JEHOVAH.”

The fact is that Israel would have been wiped out had Bill Moyers been leading them in the pillar of cloud just like they would be wiped out if they listened to his appalling moral idiocy today.  And Moyers is double the fool, for he attempts to imply a moral equivalence between the Jews and the terrorists.  Does he truly not realize that the goal of the terrorists is to kill every Jew; but that it is not and never has been the goal of the Jews to kill every Muslim?  How dare this morally depraved man attempt to create a parity between Jew and terrorist!  Moreover, how dare this depraved man attempt to even insinuate that the God of Moses provides a justification to wipe out Jews.

Let me, then, answer a more fundamental question: Why DID God command the Jews to conquer and kill?  And how is what is found in the Bible different from what is found in the Qur’an?  The answer begins to unfold in Genesis 15.  God foretells to Abraham that his descendants would “be strangers in a land that is not theirs [Egypt], where they will be enslaved and oppressed 400 years.”  And in verse 16 God says, “Then in the fourth generation they shall return here” [to the land God gave Abraham and the Jews forever] – and then comes the big phrase – “for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete.”

By the time Moses and Joshua led the Jews into the land that God gave them through His promise to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and on through David, the Amorites had become completely depraved.  God tells the Jews through Moses again and again, “DON’T be like these people!”  And thus we come to Exodus 23:23, which Moyers alludes to.  In Deuteronomy 9:5, God says that “it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God is driving them out before you, in order to confirm the oath which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”

Scholars use the term “power encounters.”  In the ancient world of Moses’ time, peoples and cultures were entirely bound up in their gods.  And if your people came in and defeated my people, it was a proof that your god or gods were stronger than mine.  And see Deuteronomy 3:21-22 as an example that it was God who went before Israel and gave it victory, just as it was God who had brought Israel out of Egypt with a mighty hand (Deut 5:15).  And that was why Rahab the prostitute – who hid Joshua’s spies in Jericho – said, “I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you” (Joshua 2:9).

In short, God used the cultural reality of the day to show whose God was truly God over and against the depraved gods whose worship mandated child sacrifice, and He used the Jews to judge peoples who had succumbed to total depravity, to incest, child sacrifice, and every evil thing you can imagine.

And how does this differ from what is found in the Qur’an?  Throughout the Old Testament, God’s commandments to His people to commit acts of violence – to be His instrument of divine judgment, so that the other cultures would identify Jews with their all-powerful God  – was always situational.  In every case, God commanded a particular group of people to do a particular thing at a particular time in history – and to a particular enemy.  Contrast this with the Qur’an, which repeatedly emphasizes timeless, static commands to kill the infidel or to othe5 acts of violence (e.g. Sura 2:190−4).  See also the following links, here and here.

Mukhlas, one of the Muslim perpetrators of the 2002 bombings in Bali, cited a historical fact about the Prophet Muhammad in the December 18, 2005 issue of The Australian:

“Aren’t you aware that the model for us all, the Prophet Mohammed and the four rightful caliphs, undertook to murder infidels as one of their primary activities, and that the Prophet waged jihad operations 77 times in the first 10 years as head of the Muslim community in Medina?”

Contrast Mohammed’s 77 historically documented campaigns of violence with Jesus, who said to His followers when His enemies came to seize Him,

“Put away your sword.  For all who live by the sword will die by the sword” (Matthew 26:52).

Through the Jews, God progressively established over time a completely new moral system to the world.  And by the time of Christ, that system had transformed the moral thinking of ancient world around the Jews.

Yet Islam, which surfaced not in the 13th century B.C. or even in the 1st century A.D., but in the SEVENTH century A.D., exhibits none of the restraints against violence that Judaism had developed and Christianity passionately embraced.  To cite just one example, 100 years after the death of Christ, Christian believers were dying as non-violent martyrs suffering Roman persecution.  Contrast that with 732 AD, with Muslims pouring across Europe to kill and pillage – only to finally be stopped by Charles Martel at Tours, France.  They likewise poured out of Arabia into Africa with the scimitar to seize kingdoms and eradicate Christianity.

This is why Robert Spencer, in his powerful book The Truth About Muhammad: Founder of the World’s Most Intolerant Religion, argues the terrifying but true thesis that Islam – properly understood through the paradigmatic life of the Prophet Muhammad – entails violent jihad.

Bill Moyers is the very worst kind of fool.  He is a fool who thinks he is wise, and a fool who is respected as wise by many around him.  He knows nothing about religion, or about the myriad differences between Islam and Judeo-Christianity.  And he most certainly knows nothing of moral wisdom or the common sense that emanates from such wisdom.

As Israel wraps up its campaign to deal with terrorists who have indiscriminately launched more than 6300 explosive-armed rockets and missiles into Israel just since 2005, I hope that you stand with Israel in its determination to live democratically amidst terrorists who want to destroy it, and condemn appeasing fools such as Bill Moyers.

    Hi Michael,
Thanks for the great articles and the truth being trumpeted. I was appalled listening to the what Bill Moyers said. The anti-Semetic voice is getting louder and more blatant. What he did was dangerous.
    This is frightening.
I learn a lot and grow in understanding by reading your posts.
Sad day today! I feel like I have been mourning the loss of America daily for about two weeks now with everything O has said and done while most are celebrating their “Genie in a Bottle.”

I am pretty sure that moron Bill Moyers is a Christian. Possibly one just like Ann Coulter.

I am sure that the Israelites waged war in theri early perios, as did evey other group. Unfortunately, the Christian bloodletting killed millions of innocent people. Does Mr. Moyer mention this? I doubt it. Then we can talk about all the murders committed in the name of Islam.

There are many morons like Moyers that feel that if Israel didn’t exist, all the world’s problems would be solved. This is an oidea that must surely come from people with shoe size IQs.

The Jews are figting for thier lives. The Muslims are fighting in most parts fo the world. Theie state, emts in public [rpve that Muslims want to control the world. They say it every week.

So if you’d like to live under Sharia law, please support the Muslims.

You might be “SURE” Moyers is a Christian, but you would be quite wrong. Moyers is a liberal and a secular humanist. He wasn’t want ANYTHING that God-fearing Christians who treasure Scripture want. It is unfair to put that man in our camp.

I am no big Coulter fan, but I found one site to demonstrate that it is not right to compare Moyers to Coulter either. She WANTS to fight terrorism.

Israel has no better friend in the world than evangelical Christians. You may commence Googling “Christian Zionist” to start learning how profoundly CHRISTIANS helped create the modern state of Israel. Christians like me – who take the Scriptures literally – have been predicting for over 150 years that the state of Israel would be reborn. We believe that God still has a special place in His plan for national and ethnic Israel. We take seriously God’s Word to “pray for the peace of Jerusalem.” And it is because of Christians that the United States has been the best friend and ally since the state of Israel was born (as well as the FIRST nation to recognize Israel).

  4. Michael Eden Says:

I’m glad we are together on supporting Israel and standing against those who would condemn her unfairly. It IS dangerous. In the last days, the Bible says Israel will stand alone against the whole world. We already see that coming now (as only the US stands with Israel today, and the US isn’t looking like such a solid ally any more).

It was a sad day yesterday, and there are many more such days facing us. But take hope.

I have been comforted with Scripture these last months. God told us that the world would go to hell. And I truly believe we’re in the last days His Word spoke of. But we also know that 1) God IS in control and 2) that He is going to ultimately set everything aright.

My America is only in history books now (and sadly only a few, the rest having been altered). But I still look back at that America and take some of my values and courage from it.

    Hi Michael,
I received this from a friend and because of your support of Israel, I wanted to pass it on to you. It is written by a MD who lives in northern Israel. She is correct that we in the West certainly are not hearing this from the media.

While the media in the West are lambasting Israel for killing women and
children, and are saturating their viewers with horrific photos of bloodied
corpses, Israel as a nation is undergoing an astonishing spiritual awakening
as a result of this conflict. It is a pity that the world is unable to be
witness to the miracles that are occurring here daily. Even the most jaded
person would be amazed at the transformation of the people in this country.
After many years of feeling the underdog and fearful of the approbation of
the outside world, Israel is undergoing an absolute renaissance on a
    personal and national level.

First and foremost, Israel as a nation has finally decided to throw aside
the fear of being rejected by the nations and embrace its sovereign right to
defend it’s citizens from terrorist attacks. What is so astonishing, for
those who know Jews and particularly Israelis, is that a whopping 92% of
Jewish Israelis actually AGREE that the war is necessary and just. The adage
of 2 Jews, 3 opinions and 4 political parties has vaporized in the face of
the national crisis we are in. Not only is there agreement among the
populace, but also the left wing and the right wing of the political spheres
agree. Even more amazing is the concordance among the various religious
factions: Ashkenazi, Sephardic, reform and conservative, Zionists and
anti-Zionist Jews are all joining together in prayer and supplication to the
Almighty for salvation, protection and victory over our enemies. There are
calls to prayer everywhere, regardless of denomination or ethnic background,
everyone is united in looking towards the God of Israel to keep our soldiers
safe and help us win against an evil enemy who has sworn never to stop until
Israel as a nation is destroyed.

The soldiers themselves seem to have a huge spiritual hunger, and are
unified in not only asking for prayer but also praying themselves, wearing
tzitzit (prayer tassles) into battle and carrying the book of Psalms with
them. The Rabbis are calling the tzitzit “heavenly flak jackets!” Tent
synagogues on the battlefield have no less than 10 sessions every morning,
and it is reported that soldiers who never attended synagogue are now
praying with tefillim. They have reason to cry out to God, since everyone is
aware of the years of preparation of the bloodthirsty Hamas militants, their
desire to kill, maim or kidnap Israeli soldiers is greater than their desire
to live; they have been financed by Iran and supported by Syria and
Hezbollah. Yet, we are defeating them, and there are reports daily of
amazing miracles of protection and Divine direction during the battle. The
following are jus a few examples: A Hamas map was found, with booby-traps,
landmines and sniper positions clearly spelled out. The IDF was able to
counter each installation due to the information given. A large platoon of
soldiers not realizing they were resting in a school that was booby-trapped,
(discovered by a soldier relieving himself in the night), disarmed the bombs
with no one hurt. A single soldier successfully fought off several Hamas
terrorists trying to drag him into a tunnel, and all were captured. Hundreds
of tunnels, hidden in homes under beds and kitchen cabinets, all full of
live explosives and ammunition, yet none have exploded with IDF soldiers

While there have been soldiers wounded, there are miracles there as well. A
young man who moved here alone from England less than 2 years ago to serve
in the army was in an explosion, and thrown into the air. After being
carried off the field by other soldiers and transported on a tractor to
helicopter and then to hospital, the doctors were utterly stunned when they
saw that a piece of shrapnel that went completely through his neck, missed
the carotid artery, the jugular vein and the spinal cord by millimeters.
After they removed it, he needed only stitches.? Another soldier was shot
through the back but the bullet missed his spinal cord and exited from the
front. A young newlywed, in grave condition, inexplicably turned for the
better and will recover to go home to his wife.

On the ground level, bombs continue to fall, but here again, miracle after
miracle is reported even on the local news. One hears the word “nes”
(miracle) over and over by the reporters and the bystanders. A bomb heading
toward 4 apartment buildings goes into a sewer pipe and explodes
underground, damaging nothing above ground. An elderly woman caught in an
apartment completely demolished by a bomb, walks out with scratches on her
ankle. The mayor of Beersheva felt he should cancel school one day, and a
rocket completely destroys an empty kindergarten. The elder housing complex
that was hit in Nahariya had the sleeping quarters destroyed, but everyone
had just gone to breakfast, so no one injured. A man leaves his car with his
young daughter, and the car is blown up moments later after they entered a
bomb shelter. If they had taken a few more seconds, he and his daughter
would have been burned to a crisp. He was televised saying again and again
    it was a miracle.

Similar stories like these were heard during the second Lebanon war,
    reported on Israeli radio and television, but no one in the west ever heard;
only negative propaganda from the terrorists was reported, whose aim was to
malign Israel and make us look like a nation of bloodthirsty killers. One
has to grieve over the terrible destruction of the cities in Gaza and the
horrific human tragedy going on there, but the responsibility for the
suffering and death is directly on the doorstep of the Hamas leadership.
These deluded people think that their god, Allah, will give them victory,
and have entered into a battle with the true God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob
that they will never win. We are literally living in times like those of the
scripture, when the Lord told Elisha all the plans of the enemy, until they
began to wonder if there was a spy in their ranks.

There is hope here and unity of resolve, not despair. Even the parents of
Yoni Natanel, killed by friendly fire, were quoted as saying that their son
died “for the sanctification of God’s name,” and forgave and blessed those
who accidently fired at his unit. There is such heroism and courage here,
one wishes that the world could see it, but as one of our journalists said,
the media have left their brains at the door of Ben Gurion Airport. They are
many miles away from the actual battle, wear flak jackets and helmets for
the cameras, and then take them off to have cappuccino at the local

Fortunately, Israelis are accustomed to being misunderstood and maligned by
the outside world. At this point, everyone knows we have a job to do, and we
are becoming more and more aware that there is a greater Power than us is on
our side. We are fulfilling our commission to be a “Light to the Nations.”
Israel learned from the failure of the Lebanon war, and prepared well to
fight the terrorists who clearly said they wanted to destroy us. The rest of
the nations have not remembered the threats of Hitler, and how the Jewish
people were almost wiped out because no one wanted to believe he actually
meant what he said. Contrary to those who want to hide their heads in the
sands of political correctness, there is a right and a wrong side in this
conflict. It is a battle between darkness and light. Fortunately, we have a
God who was never wishy-washy about defending Israel against her enemies,
when His People cried out to Him for help. The outside world is missing the
miracle of a righteous God who hears the prayers of the humble, and defends
    what is His!

If My people, who are called by My Name, will humble themselves and pray and
seek My Face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven
and will forgive their sin and will heal their land (2 Chron 7:14).

  6. Michael Eden Says:

    Thanks for the article.

I read a book, “O, Jerusalem,” that documents miracle after miracle (without ever once calling them such). Things that happened at just the right moment. The Arabs NOT doing something that would have brought them victory had they done it. Just all kinds of things.

And, yes, my understanding of Scripture predicts that Jews would begin to have a renewed spiritual hunger in the last days.

I believe that Jews need Jesus to be saved. But I also believe that God passionately cares about Israel and about Jews, and is working in history to providentially protect them and guide them to the moment when they “mourn Him whom they have pierced” (Zech 12:10). And I join wholeheartedly with what I believe God is doing as a Christian.

I also recognize that “Judeo-Christianity” is a comprehensive worldview. Judaism is part of who we are as Christians. And we need to stand with them – and if necessary stand in FRONT of them – as the days get darker.
