The Liberal-Media Complex And The Lies To Abolish The 2nd Amendment

Fox News puts the lie to the Democrats and the media’s deceitful claim that “90% of the guns used by the Mexican drug cartels come from America:

The Myth of 90 Percent: Only a Small Fraction of Guns in Mexico Come From U.S.
While 90 percent of the guns traced to the U.S. actually originated in the United States, the percent traced to the U.S. is only about 17 percent of the total number of guns reaching Mexico.
By William La Jeunesse and Maxim Lott Thursday, April 02, 2009

EXCLUSIVE: You’ve heard this shocking “fact” before — on TV and radio, in newspapers, on the Internet and from the highest politicians in the land: 90 percent of the weapons used to commit crimes in Mexico come from the United States.

— Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said it to reporters on a flight to Mexico City.

— CBS newsman Bob Schieffer referred to it while interviewing President Obama.

— California Sen. Dianne Feinstein said at a Senate hearing: “It is unacceptable to have 90 percent of the guns that are picked up in Mexico and used to shoot judges, police officers and mayors … come from the United States.”

— William Hoover, assistant director for field operations at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, testified in the House of Representatives that “there is more than enough evidence to indicate that over 90 percent of the firearms that have either been recovered in, or interdicted in transport to Mexico, originated from various sources within the United States.”

There’s just one problem with the 90 percent “statistic” and it’s a big one:

It’s just not true.

In fact, it’s not even close. The fact is, only 17 percent of guns found at Mexican crime scenes have been traced to the U.S.

What’s true, an ATF spokeswoman told, in a clarification of the statistic used by her own agency’s assistant director, “is that over 90 percent of the traced firearms originate from the U.S.”

But a large percentage of the guns recovered in Mexico do not get sent back to the U.S. for tracing, because it is obvious from their markings that they do not come from the U.S.

“Not every weapon seized in Mexico has a serial number on it that would make it traceable, and the U.S. effort to trace weapons really only extends to weapons that have been in the U.S. market,” Matt Allen, special agent of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), told FOX News.

A Look at the Numbers

In 2007-2008, according to ATF Special Agent William Newell, Mexico submitted 11,000 guns to the ATF for tracing. Close to 6,000 were successfully traced — and of those, 90 percent — 5,114 to be exact, according to testimony in Congress by William Hoover — were found to have come from the U.S.

But in those same two years, according to the Mexican government, 29,000 guns were recovered at crime scenes.

In other words, 68 percent of the guns that were recovered were never submitted for tracing. And when you weed out the roughly 6,000 guns that could not be traced from the remaining 32 percent, it means 83 percent of the guns found at crime scenes in Mexico could not be traced to the U.S.

So, if not from the U.S., where do they come from? There are a variety of sources:

— The Black Market. Mexico is a virtual arms bazaar, with fragmentation grenades from South Korea, AK-47s from China, and shoulder-fired rocket launchers from Spain, Israel and former Soviet bloc manufacturers.

— Russian crime organizations. Interpol says Russian Mafia groups such as Poldolskaya and Moscow-based Solntsevskaya are actively trafficking drugs and arms in Mexico.

– South America. During the late 1990s, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) established a clandestine arms smuggling and drug trafficking partnership with the Tijuana cartel, according to the Federal Research Division report from the Library of Congress.

— Asia. According to a 2006 Amnesty International Report, China has provided arms to countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Chinese assault weapons and Korean explosives have been recovered in Mexico.

— The Mexican Army. More than 150,000 soldiers deserted in the last six years, according to Mexican Congressman Robert Badillo. Many took their weapons with them, including the standard issue M-16 assault rifle made in Belgium.

— Guatemala. U.S. intelligence agencies say traffickers move immigrants, stolen cars, guns and drugs, including most of America’s cocaine, along the porous Mexican-Guatemalan border. On March 27, La Hora, a Guatemalan newspaper, reported that police seized 500 grenades and a load of AK-47s on the border. Police say the cache was transported by a Mexican drug cartel operating out of Ixcan, a border town.

‘These Don’t Come From El Paso’

Ed Head, a firearms instructor in Arizona who spent 24 years with the U.S. Border Patrol, recently displayed an array of weapons considered “assault rifles” that are similar to those recovered in Mexico, but are unavailable for sale in the U.S.

“These kinds of guns — the auto versions of these guns — they are not coming from El Paso,” he said. “They are coming from other sources. They are brought in from Guatemala. They are brought in from places like China. They are being diverted from the military. But you don’t get these guns from the U.S.”

Some guns, he said, “are legitimately shipped to the government of Mexico, by Colt, for example, in the United States. They are approved by the U.S. government for use by the Mexican military service. The guns end up in Mexico that way — the fully auto versions — they are not smuggled in across the river.”

Many of the fully automatic weapons that have been seized in Mexico cannot be found in the U.S., but they are not uncommon in the Third World.

The Mexican government said it has seized 2,239 grenades in the last two years — but those grenades and the rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) are unavailable in U.S. gun shops. The ones used in an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Monterrey in October and a TV station in January were made in South Korea. Almost 70 similar grenades were seized in February in the bottom of a truck entering Mexico from Guatemala.

“Most of these weapons are being smuggled from Central American countries or by sea, eluding U.S. and Mexican monitors who are focused on the smuggling of semi-automatic and conventional weapons purchased from dealers in the U.S. border states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California,” according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.

Boatloads of Weapons

So why would the Mexican drug cartels, which last year grossed between $17 billion and $38 billion, bother buying single-shot rifles, and force thousands of unknown “straw” buyers in the U.S. through a government background check, when they can buy boatloads of fully automatic M-16s and assault rifles from China, Israel or South Africa?

Alberto Islas, a security consultant who advises the Mexican government, says the drug cartels are using the Guatemalan border to move black market weapons. Some are left over from the Central American wars the United States helped fight; others, like the grenades and launchers, are South Korean, Israeli and Spanish. Some were legally supplied to the Mexican government; others were sold by corrupt military officers or officials.

The exaggeration of United States “responsibility” for the lawlessness in Mexico extends even beyond the “90-percent” falsehood — and some Second Amendment activists believe it’s designed to promote more restrictive gun-control laws in the U.S.

In a remarkable claim, Auturo Sarukhan, the Mexican ambassador to the U.S., said Mexico seizes 2,000 guns a day from the United States — 730,000 a year. That’s a far cry from the official statistic from the Mexican attorney general’s office, which says Mexico seized 29,000 weapons in all of 2007 and 2008.

Chris Cox, spokesman for the National Rifle Association, blames the media and anti-gun politicians in the U.S. for misrepresenting where Mexican weapons come from.

“Reporter after politician after news anchor just disregards the truth on this,” Cox said. “The numbers are intentionally used to weaken the Second Amendment.”

“The predominant source of guns in Mexico is Central and South America. You also have Russian, Chinese and Israeli guns. It’s estimated that over 100,000 soldiers deserted the army to work for the drug cartels, and that ignores all the police. How many of them took their weapons with them?”

But Tom Diaz, senior policy analyst at the Violence Policy Center, called the “90 percent” issue a red herring and said that it should not detract from the effort to stop gun trafficking into Mexico.

“Let’s do what we can with what we know,” he said. “We know that one hell of a lot of firearms come from the United States because our gun market is wide open.”

As the article points out, this is such a transparent lie it is literally laughable: why would violent, vicious, and vastly wealthy drug cartels want to bother with single shot weapons when they can get their hands on full auto versions?  Only the military and police SWAT units – along with a few incredibly regulated licensed gun owners – have access to fully automatic weapons in the United States.  And the guns going to Mexico are not coming from any of these American sources.

And yet the media was everywhere reporting the completely false story.

And what is even more shocking is that the American Secretary of State is repeating an outright lie and demonizing the entire American gun industry:

“The guns that are sold in the United States, which are illegal in Mexico, get smuggled over our border and arm these terrible drug-dealing criminals so that they can outgun these poor police officers along the border and elsewhere in Mexico. So we’ve got to help out here. We can’t stand by and say, Well, you know, you guys just do the best you can, when we, unfortunately, are the market for drugs, when a lot of the money is laundered in the United States back into the hands of the drug kingpins, and when the weapons have come from our country. So I think recognizing the co-responsibility is just stating the obvious.”

So the obvious question is, why is the American media, and why are Democratic politicians, blaming America and blaming American guns for the problems in Mexico?

And the answer is as obvious as it is disturbing: because they despise the American Constitution, and in particular they despise the 2nd Amendment which guarantees the rights of citizens to keep and bear arms.

Barack Obama’s Attorney General, Eric Holder, is just one among many Democrats citing the situation in Mexico to impose gun controls in the United States.  Fortunately, a small cadre of Democrats have joined Republicans in their opposition to using the lies over the deteriorating situation in Mexico to impose anti-Constitutional laws on American citizens.

We need to point the finger at Obama, at his attorney general, at his secretary of state, and at every other politician who is demagoguing and lying to take away our Constitutionally-guaranteed rights and freedoms.

We have recently had a series of terrible mass murders involving guns, and many liberals will invariably cite these as proofs that we should take away gun rights from Americans.  I know three things: 1) that the founding fathers guaranteed the right of citizens to keep guns as a deterrent against tyranny, and that – given the unprecedented power-grabbing of this government – this right is more crucial than ever; 2) that taking away guns from law-abiding citizens will merely ensure that only criminals have them to terrorize the innocent; and 3) that the unarmed victims of the shooting rampages wished they had weapons when the psychopaths came in shooting.  Wishing that the psychopaths didn’t have guns is as much wishful thinking as wishing that there weren’t any psychopaths to begin with.  In times of danger and uncertainty, Americans don’t need wishful thinking; they need the means to defend themselves and their homes and families.

I am worried that gun rights advocates like the guy who wasted 3 policemen in Pittsburg yesterday are getting out of control in defense of gun rights.
To some gun rights advocates any attempt to discuss the limits of gun rights is an act punishable by death
They sort of remind me of the Talaban.
There is a blurry fine line between the terrorists and the ardent supporters of gun rights.
I think they’ve all started to get a little crazy

Good post. One must wonder what is really behind the desire to destroy the second amendment. It can’t really be a desire to protect Americans, that is logically absurd. So what is it really? Is there a movement out there that would like a completely unarmed and vulnerable public? For what purpose? I can only hope these people are deluded and confused rather than activily desiring the destruction and enslavement of their countrymen.

  4. R. B. Ramos Says:

Mexico is not a weapons bazar as mentioned in some articles, this statemente only shows a total lack of knowledge of the reality in that country.

Buying weapons in Mexico can only be done legally through the Defense Department, and they ONLY sell weapons for hunting and target practices; automatic guns and large caliber hand guns are banned.

Regarding the deserters of the Mexican Army, they virtually never take their weapon with them and another mistake: their standard issued weapon is an HK G3, not M16. The reason they do not take the weapon with them is simple: if they do it, the Army goes after them, if they don’t they rarely bother.

    Get your facts right.

Great piece; I really enjoyed it. You guys are clearly & truly committed to keeping conservatives out of power for at least a generation, probably more. Keep up the good work.

  6. Michael Eden Says:

I can’t disagree with you; some people take gun rights too far. And become as scary as anyone in their zeal and willingness to even commit violence in the name of their cause.

Realize that 1) the founding fathers enacted the specific right for the people to keep and bear arms as a reaction against government tyranny; and the most tyrannous and totalitarian governments in world history were the most “anti-gun.”

Realize 2) that as our system breaks down – and it is very definitely breaking down – to pass laws against keeping and bearing arms guarantees that only the law-abiding won’t have guns. Criminals don’t bother with laws. And there is no longer any question that it is impossible to keep smuggled ANYTHING out of the country. We are so out-of-control now that we are literally releasing criminals for lack of space to hold them.

Realize 3) that the regions with the most open (loosest) gun laws also have the very lowest gun crimes in the country. It is the most restricted areas that have the most gun crimes.

Realize 4) that when psychopaths armed with guns launch mass killings, what their victims want is guns to protect themselves. There will always be psychopaths, and there will always be guns in the hands of terrible people. Gun laws only prevent the law-abiding from owning guns. People have the right to be able to protect themselves.

Let me conclude with this, though, Norris. I am one of the law-abiding. If the authorities come to take my guns, I will surrender them without the “you can pry them from my cold dead fingers” mindset. But I will also mourn; because I will know that my country has truly become fascist on the day that they come to take my ability and right to protect myself and my home and family.

  7. Michael Eden Says:

If only the government has arms, then the government need not fear its people. If only the government has arms, then the people MUST turn to the government to protect them from chaos – no matter how evil that government is.

It is a way of guaranteeing total power.

Supreme Court Justice Brandeis said, “There can be no greater danger to our nation’s liberty than men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding.”

  8. Michael Eden Says:

It is frankly amazing that you have total faith in Mexico’s ability to control its weapons and its people when a) the society is on the verge of going completely out of control; b) not only soldiers in Mexico, but policemen and judges have repeatedly been demonstrated to be completely corrupt, and on the payroll of the drug cartels. Whole units of the military and the police have been found to be corrupt.

Your blind faith in a corrupt and broken system pretty much guarantees that there are NO possible facts that will ever convince you of anything – because your mindset flies completely in the face of facts. So there is really no sense trying to argue with you, is there?

  9. Michael Eden Says:

    You might be right, Dan.

We may have so degenerated as a society that a majority are now people just like you – people who do not care about demonstrable lies and propaganda, or about our politicians establishing society based on lies and propaganda. We may have degenerated to the point where citizens call evil good and good evil, put darkness for light and light for darkness, and put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter (Isaiah 5:20).

Isaiah also warns us of the arrogant, smarmy, self-satisfied perverted mindset that sees itself wise in its own sight, and so shrewd and clever that it thinks it can avoid the wrath that is being stored up (vs 21).

  10. Michael Eden Says:

You’re right. Better that I cite CBS, where Dan Rather used fraudulent documents to try to undermine Bush just before the election. Oops. That’s right. Fox didn’t do anything like that.

Or to cite ABC, whose political director Mark Halperin emailed journalists and told them to stop covering the election fairly and instead favor Democrats and John Kerry.

Study after study has documented that the media is shockingly biased toward liberals and Democrats.

The media has been so blatantly biased throughout its election coverage that it is completely accurate to say that we are now in a propaganda state. There is no possible way that Republicans can win in this media climate: whether you look at the Media Research Center, or at the Project for Excellence in Journalism (or again at their brand new study), or at the University of Wisconsin’s Wisconsin Advertising Project, there is widespread agreement with one longtime ABC journalist that the media is dangerously biased. Pew Research discovered that Americans believe by a 70% to 9% margin that the media is biased in favor of Obama and against McCain. The media now represents a fifth column of government – a propaganda wing – that attacks conservatives and celebrates and defends Democrats and their ideology.

Hillary Clinton ran into that buzzsaw when the media decided on Obama and started treating the Clintons like Republicans. I STILL love the way the liberal media “played the race card on Bill Clinton” (whom they used to call “the first black president”).

But you go ahead and keep believing your stupid little nonsense. And, hey, go ahead and mock people who don’t believe the pile of lies you do. Good luck with that.

My chief prayer for my mom is that she will be alive and healthy to be taken up in the Rapture.
