Mitt Romeny’s Speech And Religion: What He Should And Shouldn’t Say To Evangelicals About His Mormonism

As I write this, Mitt Romney is yet hours away from giving his RNC convention speech later this evening.  That said, his speech is obviously already written, and moreover he and his speechwriters wouldn’t have listened to a pissant like me, anyway.

So I’m not really writing this to Mitt Romney; I’m writing it to his audience – especially to his evangelical audience (of which I happen to be a member).

Should Mitt Romney talk about his [Mormon] religion?  My answer is, “Yes and no.”  Let me talk about the “no” part first.

What should Romney NOT say to the evangelicals who make up a whopping portion of his voters?

Mitt Romney should not try to convince evangelicals – who know better – that he is a Christian just like they are.  He simply isn’t; Mormonism has a very different understanding of the Person and Work of Jesus Christ than do orthodox, Trinitarian, evangelical Christians.

If Mitt Romney tries to tell evangelicals that Mormonism – which holds that “God” Himself was merely once a created being (punting on the question of who created our particular “God”), and that this same “God” who was Himself created then later created Christ who is only an angel (and in fact the spirit brother of Lucifer the devil) – is no different from evangelical Christianity, he will do nothing more than offend us and actually LOSE our vote.

This is where the more troubling aspects of Mormonism come into play:

From Brigham Young (as in “Brigham Young University”):

“When our father Adam came into the garden of Eden, he came into it with a celestial body, and brought Eve, one of his wives, with him. He helped to make and organize this world. He is MICHAEL, the Archangel, the ANCIENT OF DAYS! about whom holy men have written and spoken—He is our FATHER and our GOD, and the only God with whom WE have to do. Every man upon the earth, professing Christians or non-professing, must hear it, and will know it sooner or later.”

“When the Virgin Mary conceived the child Jesus, the Father had begotten him in his own likeness. He was not begotten by the Holy Ghost. And who is the Father? He is the first of the human family”.  Young explained that Adam “was begotten by his Father in heaven” in the same way that Adam begat his own sons and daughters, and that there were “three distinct characters, namely, Eloheim, Yahovah, and Michael.” Then, reiterating, he said that “Jesus, our elder brother, was begotten in the flesh by the same character that was in the Garden of Eden, and who is our Father in Heaven.”

Hey, Mitt, whatever you do, please don’t tell me you’re a Christian just like I am.  Because I will be legitimately offended and start wondering what else you might be lying about.

Adam Smith likewise made it ABUNDANTLY CLEAR that Mormons are NOT Christians like orthodox Christians:

18 My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong)—and which I should join.

19 I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: “they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.”

20 He again forbade me to join with any of them; and many other things did he say unto me, which I cannot write at this time.

Joseph Smith very specifically said that no orthodox, historical Christian denomination was valid.  Which is to say that from the very beginning, Mormonism recognized the gulf between Mormons and those who had called themselves “Christian” for 2,000 years before Mormonism.

Please don’t contradict your own Mormon history and tell us that you’re a “Christian,” Mitt.  Because unless you repudiate your Mormonism, you just aint a Christian by any orthodox or historical standard.  And if you just flat-out try to deny the crucial and critical differences between Mormonism and Christianity, you will outrage the very people you need to depend upon most for your election.

That’s the “no” part to the question, “Should Mitt Romney talk about his religion.”  What about the “yes” part?

Mitt Romney should talk about faith in the generic sense of the term; not the specific content of his faith, and not that his “faith” is a Christian faith.  Mitt Romney should indicate that he is a religious person with a religious worldview.

And I submit that Mitt Romney should – without directly claiming himself a “Christian” – affirm a Judeo-Christian worldview.

Because while Mormons do NOT embrace the same theology as historic, orthodox Christianity as understand by evangelicals, Mormons most certainly DO have a Judeo-Christian view of the world and have a Judeo-Christian view toward morality in general.

And given that, I am comfortable having a “Mormon” who isn’t going to do anything in any way, shape or form to propagate his Mormonism, as my president.  Especially given the fact that the man he is running against has a form of “Christianity” that is even FURTHER away from historic, orthodox Christianity than Mormonism.

When the militant homosexual agenda is “Christian,” as it is on Obama’s view; when the militant abortion agenda that has murdered 54.5 million babies since Roe v. Wade was imposed in 1973 is “Christian,” as it is on Obama’s view; when “Christianity” is a Marxist core with a candy coating of “liberation theology,” as it is on Obama’s view; when “Christianity” allows you to spend some 25 years in a Marxist, racist, anti-American “church” as Obama’s “Christianity” allowed him to do in Jeremiah Wright’s Trinity United Church” (and see here); when “Christianity” means explicitly rejecting individual salvation by faith in Jesus Christ alone into a Marxist “collective salvation” as Obama’s “faith” does; you are very far from “Christian,” indeed.

The true nature of Obama’s “salvation” in his own words:

“… working on issues of crime and education and employment and seeing that in some ways certain portions of the African American community are doing as bad if not worse, and recognizing that my fate remain tied up with their fates, that my individual salvation is not going to come about without a collective salvation for the country.

“Collective” as in “collectivist.”  And “collectivist” as in “communist.”  Because Obama’s “Christianity” is a candy coating over a hard nut of Marxism just as Jeremiah Wright’s “Christianity” is.

Any orthodox Christian can tell you – and quote the Bible to prove it – that individuals are saved by their individual and personal faith in Jesus Christ in a dependence upon His righteousness and His substitutionary death in our place on the Cross.   My faith – regardless of the color of my skin – is not “tied up” in ANYTHING other than the Person and Work of Jesus Christ, God the Son, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, who shares in and participates in the divine essence of the eternal Father.

Barack Obama does NOT have a Judeo-Christian worldview in any way, shape or form.

Obama’s “Christianity” is Jeremiah Wright’s “them Jews” Christianity:

And it most definitely is NOT “Judeo-Christian.”

This will very probably be the very first election in American history in which neither major party candidate is a true Christian.

That said, I am FAR more comfortable as a Christian and particularly as an evangelical Christian voting for Mitt Romney than I am voting for a radical Marxist heretic like Barack Hussein Obama.

Mitt Romney needs to convey those significant ways that he thinks just like evangelical Christians without insulting us by saying he’s no different than we are.  He needs to focus on morality and on worldview and get away from specific content of the Christian – or Mormon – faith.

  1. Charles Slakan Says:

Mitt Romney is not a christian. He is a mormon whose book of mormon is a spiritual book that is ahead of the Holy Bible.
Neither could Mary be a virgin if the mormon god who was once a man went into her like any man inthe flesh;she would have been made an adulteress considering she was bethrothed to Joseph.
According to Joseph Smith, Jesus’es blood is not enough for Salvation but a mormons’ own blood is required.
Christianity rests on Grace without exception, free, with good works to follow.
The fact that Mitt was a bishop of that anti-christ cult and has only one wife defies understanding, considering Joseph Smith said mormon that rejected plural marriage was damned and could not go to their planet and become a god and have plural wives like their god has.
Mormons said Jesus had multiple wives when Jesus said clearly, unless a man or woman leave their marriage for adultery(Paul added that the spouse was a non-believer), then a marriage to another makes both of them adulterers every day they stay in their adultery. Jesus told the adulteress, go sin no more. She was brought to him to be stoned for adultery, a sin God hates.
Mormons say Jesus is a brother of Satan.
    Where is that in Scripture?
Revelation tells the reader, God cursed a woman because she ate food from the altar of idols, clearly any Christian that eats from the altar Mormons present to them is cursed according to God.
A person cannot serve two masters.
Several evangelical preachers have perhaps committed blasphemy for saying they are not sure about Pres.Obama’s religion after having heard him,not once but several times announce that Christ was his Saviour.
To suggest Obama has an evil spirit in him when any Christian wouldn’t dare to accuse him after having heard Obama accept Christ as his Saviour is perhaps blasphemy, but to lead their sheep to the altar of an idol , Mormon is anti-Christ.
God have mercy on those that take one sheep from the Lord.

  2. Michael Eden Says:

    Charles Slakan,

I’ve said it more than once and I say it in the article you are responding to. Mitt Romney is NOT a Christian. Thank you for stating the obvious.

But when you say, “To suggest Obama has an evil spirit in him when any Christian wouldn’t dare to accuse him after having heard Obama accept Christ as his Saviour is perhaps blasphemy, but to lead their sheep to the altar of an idol , Mormon is anti-Christ,” YOU are dangerously anti-christ.

Adolf Hitler said quite a few things in PUBLIC about being a “Christian.” I have absolutely no doubts whatsoever that you are sure you’ll be seeing your Adolf in your heaven, Charles. He sure isn’t going to be going to the one I’m going to with Jesus.

Here’s some of what Hitler said when he wanted to trick the German people into supporting him. That’s easily enough to fool naive tools like YOU, Charles. But I wrote an article that has key statements by members of Hitler’s inner circle – even in their diaries and why would they lie in their own personal journals? – documenting that those who most closely followed Hitler and knew him best heard him say he was NOT a Christian.

This is what Joseph Goebbels said in his personal journal about Adolf Hitler behind the closed doors out of the public eye on 8 April 1941:

“The Fuhrer is a man totally attuned to antiquity. He hates Christianity, because it has crippled all that is noble in humanity. According to Schopenhauer, Christianity and syphilis have made humanity unhappy and unfree.”

But there are more public statements about Hitler’s “Christianity” than there are Obama’s. You couldn’t be more deluded.

How is it that you think that Obama is a genuine Christian when he spent something like 25 years in a toxic, racist, Marxist, “God damn America” church? How is it that you root for a party that literally took God out of the party platform and then BOOED God three times???

These are Obama’s words about what “Christianity” is to him:

“… working on issues of crime and education and employment and seeing that in some ways certain portions of the African American community are doing as bad if not worse, and recognizing that my fate remain tied up with their fates, that my individual salvation is not going to come about without a collective salvation for the country. Unfortunately, I think that recognition requires that we make sacrifices and this country has not always been willing to make the sacrifices that are necessary to bring about a new day and a new age.”

This one is even MORE disturbing:

Our collective service can shape the destiny of this generation,” Obama said. “Individual salvation depends on collective salvation.”

By the very words you said about Mitt Romney, Barack Obama is NOT a Christian. Unless you have decided to read your Bible to me only when it applies to Mitt Romney, then urinate on it and burn it and throw it away. No true Christian’s salvation depends on “collective salvation.” Obama is NOT a Christian; he is a Marxist who has embraced the “liberation theology” that was developed by communists and which is a candy-coating of Christian language masking a hard-core communist ideology.

So I denounce you by your own words and decry you for your blasphemy in saying it is wrong for anyone to say that Obama is not a Christian when HE IS MOST CERTAINLY NOT A CHRISTIAN.

For the record, just to document that this IS Obama’s view of Christianity, here are MORE “Individual salvation depends on collective salvation” Obama speeches:

    Xavier University

    Knox College

    Wesleyan University

    Northwestern University

    Campus Progress Convention

University of Chicago School of Medicine

    Southern New Hampshire University

Now, Charles, maybe YOUR Bible says that the militant homosexual agenda that Obama has supported is “Christian,” but the Word of God says very differently. And Mitt Romney agrees with the Word of God in that important area. More importantly, maybe YOUR Bible says that the militant abortion agenda – which has resulted in the murder of FIFTY FIVE MILLION INNOCENT BABIES – is “Christian,” but the Word of God says very differently.

Let me tell you something, Charles, YOU aren’t saved. YOU aren’t going to heaven. Because you follow an agenda that taught the Virgin Mary to kill her Baby and so Jesus never made it out of the womb to die for YOUR sins. And one day you will be held accountable, Charles, for taking your stand for the mass murder of abortion and for calling anybody who doesn’t want more innocent babies murdered a heretic.

Obama is also on the record openly mocking the Bible as a reliable Word that applies to us today:

Mitt Romney, as I detailed, is NOT a Christian. But in terms of worldview he is FAR more Christian than Barack Hussein Obama. And it very much appears he is more “Christian” than YOU are, too.

  3. Charles Slakan Says:

Doesn’t God damn the USA and every country in the world? That’s why a true Christian lives in the world but is not of it. I can’t recall if Satan left any kingdoms out when he offered oh ,he didn’t, he imcluded all the kingdoms including Judea, Galillee, All the kingdoms in the world to Jesus in return for Jesus’es worship.
Doesn’t Scripture state in Reveleation that there will be a New Heaven and A New Earth and the old heaven and earth will be no more.
And according to,Scripture that earth will have no seas, Zion will come out of the New Heaven.
To say I am not a Christian when I have supported myself with Scripture is a dangerous place to go. Jesus told the pharisees since you say, you know and maintain the Spirit in me is wicked(evil), that is a sin ,blasphemy, which will never be forgiven, not in this world nor the next.
Don’t you know if you straddle the fence with God, YOU WILL BE SPAT OUT LIKE LUKEWARM WATER. How can you be like a Christian and not be a Christian?
And FYI christianity began in the middle east and moved to Africa, way before it was accepted in Europe? The oldest Christian church is in Africa. And since God is no respector of persons, you can believe Haille Sillasse, Barrack Hussein Obama, Ali Mustafi Ali and any other name a man could have doesn’t matter to God.
Jesus chose a Jew born a roman citizen in Tarsus and involved in the stoning of several followers of Christ as His Vessel, Paul of Tarsus.
As I said, any man that confesses Jesus as Saviour could not do so according to Scripture,John, I believe unless the Truth was in them.
Blaspheming against the Holy Spirit is unforgivable.
Didn’t Paul say if you sit with a non believer and eat, make sure and don’t offend that person by eating something which is forbidden to them, even though, we all know whatever Our Lord puts in front of us is fit to eat.
A Christian would not offend because they would Never want to be responsible for driving one lamb away from Our Lord by being offensive.
I don’t need any human’s re-assurances concerning my Salvation. I know God Never Lies.
Where does it say in the Bible that you have a right or responsibility to enforce God’s Law?
Do you think the the way you responded to me is less sinful than aborting a child, theft, lying, bribery, adultery, fornication, cheating on taxes, supporting a Mormon anti-christ candidate ever,
coveting, not keeping Ceasars Law, or not loving your enemy.
I want to enlighten you to God even a sinful thought is a sin, even though the sin was not committed.
Thats why its not what goes in your mouth that damn but its what proceeds from your mouth that does damn .
Didnt Jesus tell his apostles when they were driven out of various town, to knock the dust from your sandals.
He didnt say litigate, get caught up in the world trying to force others to followmyour thruths.
If you dont approve abortion, dont abort a child. If you think homosexuality cause youto sin, dont do it.
But how dare you or anyone else use The Holy Word of God to pick and choose what Commandments you would like to adhere to while makingmexcuses for mormons, adulterers, slanderers, troublemakers, haters, the liars, thiefs, tax ripoffs, fornicaters, coveting and speaking all manner of blasphemies in God’s Name.
Don’t you fear God at all. Don’t you think God has not appointed A Perfect Judge already.
Youmare not onlymwrong for saying President Obama is not a Christian because I along with millions of Americans have heard him confess Christ as Saviour, not omce, but more than once.
Be careful from hereon, now you know and if you call The Holy Spirit evil, and when you insist YOU WILL NOT ACCEPT PRES.OBAMA’S CONFESSION OF SALVATION THROUGH JESUS CHRIST, youmare saying exactly that.
Blasheming the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, not ever.
You know why Moses gave the Israelites a bill of divorcement, even though what God joins together, let no man put asunder.
Scripture says, they were hard hearted.
Christians can not be hard hearted, theymare born again Spiritually because of the faith and faith without good works is dead.
It follows then, Christians would not divorce except as Scripture dictates and would not keep the company reprobates in their churches, adulterers who sin every single day they remain in their adulterous unsanctioned marriages while puffing up and pointing their fingers at any non believer or believer who is not like them.
Jesus said the Jews send out proseltyzers into the world and when they returned, the converts were still 10 times as evil as the proslytyzers.

  4. Michael Eden Says:

    Charles Slakan,

You ask, “Doesn’t God damn the USA and every country in the world?”

I simply respond thus: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD.” Psalm 33.

Your saying that God is going to damn every nation anyway; it doesn’t matter whether they turn to Him or not. What happened with Jonah and the city of Ninevah? The people repented and then God damned them anyway, because He’s just a God who damns. Oh, wait a second. I remember reading that in the Bible – and you’re WRONG. God forgave Ninevah and blessed that city when it repented.

Jonah started out with a wrong spirit because he started out with the same spirit you manifest now. I contrast that with the spirit of Daniel. Maybe you should read that Book and see how Daniel was a man who loved and who served and who had nothing in his heart but righteousness and the desire to be a witness of God to both His people Israel AND to Babylon and its king.

If God just damns, damns, damns and never blesses, blesses, blesses, there’s not much reason for a nation to turn to Him.

It is no different with individual people: what if no matter what you did, whether you repented or not, you were damned because God was nothing more than a God of damnation???

But you are WRONG. And God’s heart is NOT to damn, but to forgive and to bless any one and any nation who repents and turns to Him.

2 Peter 2:19 says, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

I mean, dude, I don’t know what deserted island you are living on and sending me comments from, but I happen along with the other 7 billion human beings to live in a nation. And if God damns every nation on earth, we are all of us in one giant heap of trouble.

Personally, I have a HEART for my nation.

I also have a heart for righteousness.

I want my nation to turn from evil, to turn from its wicked ways. I want my nation to be one nation, under GOD the way it USED to be and could be AGAIN if it wasn’t for the spirit of apathy that has tragically overtaken too many of the people who say they love God.

Now, you just gave me your heart as to what you believe about God’s heart toward Israel. Let me tell you what God’s Word declares:

“This is what the LORD says, He who appoints the sun to shine by day, who decrees the moon and stars to shine by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar– the LORD Almighty is his name: “Only if these decrees vanish from my sight,” declares the LORD, “will Israel ever cease being a nation before Me.” declares the LORD. — Jeremiah 31:35-36 NIV

You are wrong. God does NOT set out to damn every nation. It is NOT God’s heart to damn, but to love and to forgive and to reconcile and to have righteous people and righteous nations. You need to get with God’s program and have God’s heart and constantly search for the lost and seek to save them. You win a nation the same way you eat an elephant: one bite at a time, one soul at a time.
